Ooooo …. pretty.

Wow, another post related to my life as a road warrior.

Laptops take a huge beating on the road. From the house, into the trunk, from the trunk onto the sidewalk, onto the shuttle bus, to the ticket counter, through security, on to the airplane, off the airplane, to the luggage carousel, onto another shuttle bus, into the trunk of the rental car, into the hotel and onto the desk in the room. Pretty tiring to think about isn’t it? Do that a few times a week and you can understand how much abuse your laptop takes.

Now this laptop that takes so much abuse is also the place that probably houses all of your data. All of your countless hours of hard work sitting as 1’s and 0’s on the hard drive. What would happen if your laptop crashed? Was stolen? Lost? You’d be ok, you have a back up! Of course you do …

Performing a back up is a pain in the rear-end. I’m a geek, a tech-guy, an IT worker and I don’t nearly as often as I should. Thankfully many companies are coming up with solutions for this problem and Pexagon has created a Portable Drive that really strikes a cord with me.

  • It’s small. (1.3cm thick, see the photo below)
  • It’s HUGE!! (up to 120GB)
  • PC and Mac compatible. (How cool is that? I know someone in my who likes the Mac option)
  • Connects via USB.
  • Did I mention it’s small and it’s huge?

(See I told you it was small!)

In case you missed it, here’s a link to Pexagon’s Portable Drive.

Notebooks, iPods, mobiles, books banned on UK flights

“Air travellers leaving the United Kingdom on Thursday faced the strictest security measures in years: iPods, cellular phones, laptops, and even books and magazines were no longer permitted as carry-on items.”

As a frequent traveler, the recent events in England have struck a cord. Now, most people are expecting me to spout off about airport security and yadda, yadda, yadda. I’m not going to do that. Air travel is dangerous. As Toby Ziegler from West Wing once noted “You’re flying on a giant death tube.” Hundreds of gallons of fuel, two or more jet engines, many possible points of mechanical failure, and two stressed out pilots do not paint the picture of safety. Add those things to the fact that they are thousands of airplanes in the sky at one time, you … well, you get the idea. I believe airlines do their best to keep air travel safe. But it’s not safe, no form of travel is safe. Nothing in this world is.

Anyway, that’s enough safety talk. Now I want to mention how glad I am that I’m flying into or around the UK right now. Not having any form of entertainment on board? Not being able to do any work? Can you imagine being on a transatlantic flight and the only things to do are read (and how long can most people read for in one sitting?) or watch the sleeping guy in seat 10E who fell asleep and is now drooling on himself. I’d go nuts!

(Yes, there really was no point to this post. I just wanted to complain a little. Now go away.)
